Development of Voukourestiou str. Pedestrian Zone_Spiromiliou Arcade

City: Athens
Architect: J. Kizis & Associates

Voukourestiou street is one of the most elegant and prestigious pedestrian streets in Athens. Since 2005, the lower part of this street has been reformed as one of the hot points of the city. Indirectly lit by secondary reflectors mounted on the historical build of the City Link shopping area, offers a relaxation icon with water features, coffee shops, theaters and brand name show rooms. The Spiromiliou internal arcade, now entirely renovated hosts on one side a restaurant and a coffee house and on the other shops of established brands. The renovation process included the paving of the floor surfaces with granite tiles and the creation of a glass jagged slot that allows daylight to penetrate the internal pool of Holmes Place gymnasium on the basement level of the building. During night time, the luminous “lighting” slot guides the visitor across the arcade. The refurbishment also included the addition of a glass roof at a 25m height above the arcade for an all-weather environment with the attributes of natural light and natural ventilation. The refurbished skylights of the perimeter canopies at the arcade and the Stadiou Street façade were remodelled on the original design from old photographs while incorporating concealed lighting for a self-illuminating effect.
